Read In Between The Lines, There Was An Uprising In Guantanamo Bay Yesterday

After a mass hunger strike by 44+ of the 166 detainees that started Feb. 6th and years of peaceful resistance, prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have had enough of the torture, indefinite detention and horrid conditions. The lawyers of the inmates insist that the hunger strike in more widespread and nearly every person at the prison is refusing to eat.

Inmates covered security camera’s and windows and used broomsticks, mop handles and makeshift batons made up of tape and water bottles to clash with guards.

The violence erupted during an early morning raid at Camp 6 when guards attempted to end communal living and place all inmates in single cells. According to military officials, guards shot 4 ‘non lethal’ weapons at the inmates, 1 of which was injured. Though this should be taken with a grain a salt considering that Guantanamo Bay is where the military is known to torture inmates.

It should also be noted that 87 of the prisoners at Giztmo are cleared for release and 46 other prisoners cannot be prosecuted for a ‘lack of evidence’ according to the U.S. government. In other words, over 80% of the inmates being held at Guantanamo Bay would otherwise be free.

In January of 2013, Obama signed the NDAA 2013 which allows him to indefinitely detain American citizens without charge or trial, which is literally contradicts the constitution, and banned the government from closing Guantanamo Bay.

Yay Obama, wonderful change you got going on.

Al Nakba (“The Catastrophe” in English), or what Israel refers to as the “War of Independence,” symbolizes the dispossession, displacement, and uprooting of more than 750,000 Palestinian men, women, and children by numerically superior Israeli forces – half before any Arab armies joined the actual war. These Palestinians were driven into 59 refugee camps hastily constructed to accommodate them by UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency).

By the end of this removal campaign, Israeli forces had destroyed and/or dispossessed the populations of 531 Arab villages and eleven urban areas, and had committed 33 documented massacres which killed some 13,000 largely defenseless Arabs. One of the most well known of these massacres was the Deir Yassin massacre where over 100 people, half of them women and children, had been systematically murdered by the commandos of the Irgun, headed by Menachem Begin, and the Stern Gang.

As the massive hunger strike among prisoners at Guantanamo enters its third month, Bay Area activists took to the rails to raise awareness of this escalating human rights violation.

Inspired by an action organized by the London Guantanamo Campaign, anti-torture activists boarded BART trains on Saturday wearing the iconic orange jumpsuits and black hoods associated with detainees at Guantanamo. Somewhat ironically, the hooded prisoners read a newspaper filled with news about the prisoners’ hunger strike, which after two months has finally succeeded in doing what none of us have been able to do for the last 11 years - awaken public awareness and discussion of the ethical and legal problems of holding people indefinitely with no charges.

86 of the 166 prisoners held by the US at Guantanamo have been cleared for release, but have little hope of being free. The vast majority of the others are “considered dangerous” by the Pentagon and CIA but can never be tried for any crime, either because there is no evidence against them or because what there is was obtained through torture.

Transit riders were engaged by the theater, actively requesting copies of our flier. Hopefully that translates into action and people will pressure Obama not only to follow through on his promise to “close Guantanamo” but to release the detainees or prove they are guilty of a crime.
